Substation Designer

JOB DESCRIPTION:
Perform electrical engineering and/or support Project Integration work and provide technical assistance through the application of engineering/business knowledge. Apply established design and drafting practices in developing and/or modifying moderately complex design concepts and deliverables for new and existing High Voltage Substations and Switchyards. Coordinate with other design group personnel, both internal and external, to review and exchange project information necessary for design development. Develop or modify deliverables based on rough sketches, marked-up copies and/or detailed verbal instructions. Modify Key Plan drawings to verify equipment location, that it can be constructed, operated and maintained safely. Develop necessary views, sections and details with minimal supervision. Perform minor computations such as material quantity estimate, dimensional checks, etc., as assigned. 
Learn and understand project and company standards and procedures as well as new programs or processes required for assignments. Continually evaluate the methods used to accomplish the design concept and drafting activities that have been assigned. Ensure that the design concept and drawings are complete and meet requirements and applicable codes and standards. Ensure that the deliverables are compliant with sketches, marked copies and written or verbal instructions. Take personal accountability of actions and results. 

JOB REQUIREMENTS:
Minimum Qualifications: 

  • Exhibit knowledge of computer based engineering and business applications. 
  • Must possess demonstrated leadership skills, professionalism and customer/client focus. 
  • Must possess strong oral and written communication skills. 
  • Display aptitude in 2D and 3D CAD modeling software for large infrastructure projects.

Essential:

  • Associate Degree in Drafting or an Engineering Design Related Technology required.
  • Electrical engineering background.
  • Must possess a valid NJ Driver’s License.
  • Minimum of 5 years related work experience with an emphasis on physical Electrical Substation and Transmission Line Design and Construction. 
  • Experienced in Medium and High Voltage work. 
  • Experienced with MicroStation Version 8.
  • Proficient with MS Office Suite. 
  • Utility background (No commercial/residential backgrounds).

Preferred Job Qualifications:

  • BS or BE Electrical or Civil Engineering.
  • Experience with substation physical design and schematic and wiring diagram development a plus. 
  • Proficient in working on one line diagrams, key plans, sections and details, equipment layouts and site plans. Working with vendor and manufacturer documents. Working with Electrical, Civil designers and engineers, System protection, construction supervisors and field personnel. Familiar with overlay of Engineering Drawings on Google Maps. 
  • Familiar with drawing references and proficient to set up drawings with external references, including raster images, drawings in dxf, dgn, and dwg formats. Steel structural (lattice and poles) design and detailing experience is preferred. 
  • Proficient to prepare Bill of Material.
